News from Hawtins Stud

September 2011 - Our horses are on winning form

We have put the disappointment of the Hartpury Young Horse Championships behind us. After uncharacteristic poor performances from our four year olds it was discovered that they were suffering from a virus which affected most of the yard. Following a good rest over the summer they are now back on form.

Hawtins Floriana continues to impress. Following a minor accident over Christmas 2010 she had a quiet first half of 2011. Back on form and ready to compete by the middle of August, Floriana won her first four Novice classes in a row all with plus 70% scores and has qualified for the Novice Open winter regional championships. She then went on to try out the Elementary for size and achieved 67% first time out, winning both Restricted sections. A week later at Hartpury on only her second time out at Elementary she was overall winner of the strongly contested classes with plus 70% scores in each class. Floriana has now also qualified for the Elementary Restricted winter regional championships. In the eight outings since the middle of August, Floriana has won all eight classes, six of them overall.

We have just started to take some of our four year olds out to compete at Novice Open and we have been very pleased with their progress so far. Hawtins Destina won her first two Novice open classes with 77.5% and 74.48%! Destina presents a beautiful picture in the area.

More competitions are planned for the rest of September and October.

British Hanoverian Horse Society annual show 2011

For the first time in several years, Hawtins Stud will not be represented at the annual show in 2011. We have decided to concentrate our time and resources on the dressage competition performance of our young horses and getting our three year olds ready for sale.

All our foals qualified for the foal championship with impressive scores, including Soave, our very exciting Sir Donnerhall daughter out of our beautiful Bellissimo mare, Belladonna. Soave scored 9s across the board. Soave was also awarded 9 for her canter and a rare 10 for her trot at the Futurity evaluation.

We were asked by the German judges to re-present Belladonna for her mare performance test this year, as last year an injury prevented her from completing this successfully, although she was still awarded the coveted 1A prize. Unfortunately, we have decided not to do this as it is too early in her recovery programme after treatment. We are disappointed as this now means that she will not be eligible to achieve Elite mare status as this can not be awarded after they are five years old. However, Soave is testimony to the quality of the mare and this is what really counts. We hope Belladonna will be back out competing in 2012.

Destina at CroftonOur four year olds experience success in the young horse classes

Although the young horse classes are not our primary aim, they give the horses an opportunity to gain valuable experience. These classes are rapidly increasing in popularity and quality and qualification for any of the championships is a major achievement. We have several of our four year olds already qualified for the Shearwater young horse championships at Hartpury and the Shearwater potential international dressage horse championships at the Nationals. Others have attained high placings and very good scores, many achieved in hotly contested classes.

In only a few outings, Cezanne has now qualified for the 2011 Winter regional championships at both Novice and Elementary.
